Hello Cleveland It's great to be here today among friends. I'd like to thank Senator Obama and his folks for inviting me. I've been here many times since 1973, but never on a day as glorious as this one. We are at the crossroads. I've spent 35 years writing about America and its people. What does it mean to be an American? What are our duties, our responsibilities, our reasonable expectations when we live in a free society? I saw myself less as a partisan for any particular political party, than as an advocate for a set of ideas. Economic and social justice, America as a positive influence around the world. Truth, transparency and integrity in government. The right of every American to a job, a living wage, to be educated in a decent school, to a life filled with the dignity of work, promise, and the sanctity of home. These are the things that make a life, that build and define a society. These are the things we think of on the deepest level, when we refer to our freedoms. Today those freedoms have been damaged, and curtailed by eight years of a thoughtless, reckless, and morally adrift administration. I spent most of my life as a musician measuring the distance between the American dream and American reality. For many Americans who are today losing their jobs, their homes, seeing their retirement funds disappear, who have no health care, or who have been abandoned in our inner cities, the distance between that dream and their reality has never been greater or more painful. I believe Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and work. I believe he understands in his heart the cost of that distance in blood and suffering in the lives of everyday Americans. I believe as president he would work to bring that dream back to life, and into the lives of many of our fellow Americans, who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning. In my job, I travel around the world, and occasionally play in big stadiums, just like Senator Obama. I continue to find everywhere I go that America remains a repository for people's hopes and desires. That despite the terrible erosion of our standing around the world, for many we remain a house of dreams. One thousand George Bushes and one thousand Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down. That is something only we can do, and we're not going to let that happen. This administration will be leaving office, dumping in our laps the national tragedies of Katrina, Iraq, and our financial crisis. Our house of dreams has been abused, looted, and left in a terrible state of disrepair. It needs defending against those who would sell it down the river for power, influence or a quick buck. It needs strong arms, hearts and minds. It needs someone with Senator Obama's understanding, temperateness, deliberativeness, maturity, pragmatism, toughness and faith. But most of all it needs us. You and me. All a nation has that keeps it from coming apart is the social contract between its' citizens. Whatever grace God has deemed to impart to us resides in our connections with one another, in honoring the life, the hopes, the dreams, of the man or woman up the street, or across town. That's where we make our small claim upon heaven. In recent years that contract has been shredded and as we look around today, it is shredding before our eyes. But today we are at the crossroads. I'm honored to be here on the same stage as Senator Obama. From the beginning, there has been something in Senator Obama that has called upon our better angels, I suspect, because he has had a life where he has so often had to call upon his. We're going to need all the angels we can get on the hard road ahead. Senator Obama helped us rebuild our house big enough for the dreams of all our citizens. For how well we accomplish this task will tell us what it means to be an American in the new century, what's at stake, and what it means to live in a free society. So I don't know about you, but I want my country back, I want my dream back, I want my America back. Now is the time to stand together with Barack Obama and Joe Biden and the millions of Americans that are hungry for a new day, roll up our sleeves and come on up for the rising. Ciao Cleveland, è meraviglioso essere qui oggi tra amici. Desidero ringraziare il Senatore Obama e il suo entourage per avermi invitato. Sono stato qui molte volte fin dal 1973, ma mai in un giorno così glorioso come questo. Siamo ad un bivio. Ho passato 35 anni a scrivere dell'America e della sua gente. Cosa significa essere un Americano? Quali sono i nostri doveri, le nostre responsabilità, le nostre ragionevoli aspettative quando viviamo in una società libera? Più che partigiano d'un determinato schieramento politico, mi sono sempre visto come un sostenitore d'un insieme d'ideologie. Giustizia economica e sociale, l'America come concreta influenza sul mondo. Verità, trasparenza e integrità nel governare. Il diritto d'ogni Americano a un lavoro, un salario minimo, a essere istruiti in una scuola decente, a una vita colma della dignità del lavoro, della speranza, della sacralità della casa. Queste sono le cose che fanno una vita, che costruiscono e definiscono una società. Queste sono le cose che riteniamo fondamentali, quando riflettiamo sulle nostre libertà. Oggi queste libertà sono state danneggiate, limitate da otto anni di un'amministrazione sconsiderata, spericolata e moralmente alla deriva. Ho trascorso buona parte della mia vita di musicista valutando la distanza tra il Sogno Americano e la realtà americana. Per molti Americani che oggi stanno perdendo il loro lavoro, le loro case, che vedono scomparire le loro pensioni, che non hanno assistenza sanitaria o che sono stati abbandonati nelle nostre piccole città, la distanza tra quel sogno e la loro realtà non è mai stata più grande o più dolorosa. Credo che il Senatore Obama abbia provato la misura di quella distanza nella sua vita e nel suo lavoro. Credo che nel profondo del suo cuore comprenda il costo in sangue e sofferenza di quella distanza nella vita quotidiana degli Americani. Credo che come Presidente farà in modo di riportare in vita quel sogno e di riportarlo nelle vite di molti dei nostri compagni americani, che hanno giustamente perso fede nel suo significato. Nel mio lavoro viaggio per il mondo e talvolta mi esibisco in grandi stadi, proprio come il Senatore Obama. Dovunque io vada, continuo a riscontrare come l'America resti depositaria delle speranze e dei desideri della gente. Come, nonostante la terribile erosione della nostra reputazione in giro per il mondo, restiamo una casa dei sogni per molte persone. Un migliaio di George Bush e un migliaio di Dick Cheney non saranno mai in grado di abbattere quella casa. C'è una sola cosa che possiamo fare ed è non permettere che ciò accada. Quest'amministrazione abbandonerà la carica, lasciandoci in grembo le tragedie nazionali di Katrina, dell'Iraq e della crisi finanziaria. La nostra casa dei sogni è stata violentata, depredata e abbandonata in un terribile stato di sfacelo. Necessita di protezione contro coloro che vorrebbero svenderla per il potere, l'influenza politica o un facile bottino. Necessita di forti braccia, cuori e menti. Necessita di qualcuno con la medesima lungimiranza, decisione, maturità, pragmatismo, forza ideologica e fede del Senatore Obama. Ma più di tutto, ha bisogno di noi. Tu ed io. Tutta una nazione è tenuta insieme dal contratto sociale tra i suoi cittadini. Qualunque grazia Dio abbia deciso d'impartirci risiede nel nostro legame l'uno con l'altro, nell'onorare la vita, le speranze, i sogni dell'uomo o della donna della strada, della gente comune. Quella è la piccola richiesta che facciamo al cielo. Negli ultimi anni quel contratto è stato fatto a pezzi e, se ci guardiamo attorno oggi, continua a essere fatto a pezzi sotto i nostri occhi. Ma oggi siamo a un bivio. Sono onorato d'essere qui sullo stesso palco del Senatore Obama. Fin dall'inizio c'è stato qualcosa nel Senatore Obama che ha risvegliato i nostri migliori angeli. Sospetto che ciò sia dovuto al fatto che ha avuto una vita in cui ha dovuto così spesso risvegliare se stesso. Avremo bisogno di tutti gli angeli che riusciremo a incontrare sulla dura strada di fronte a noi. Il Senatore Obama ci ha aiutato a ricostruire la nostra casa grande abbastanza per i sogni di tutti i nostri concittadini. Per quanto bene riusciremo a portarlo a termine, questo compito ci farà comprendere cosa significhi essere un Americano nel nuovo secolo, è questa la posta in gioco, e che cosa significhi vivere in una società libera. Perciò, non so voi, ma io voglio indietro il mio paese, voglio indietro i miei sogni, voglio indietro la mia America. E' giunto il momento d'essere uniti insieme a Barack Obama, a Joe Biden e ai milioni di Americani che sono affamati di un nuovo domani. Rimbocchiamoci le maniche e facciamoci avanti per la rinascita. |
