Un nuovo brano per una compilation di protesta

Appleseed’s 21st Anniversary: Roots and Branches è un’antologia in tre CD dal contenuto interessante, che celebra il ventunesimo anniversario della casa discografica Appleseed Recording e sarà disponibile dal 19 ottobre.

Tra i brani proposti anche nuove registrazioni per Tom Morello, Donovan, Tim Robbins, John Wesley Harding e ovviamente Bruce Springsteen.

Due i brani che vedono la presenza di Springsteen, oltre a “We Shall Overcome”, già pubblicata nel 1998 nell’antologia “Where Have All the Flowers Gone? The Songs of Pete Seeger Vol. 1”, uno nuovo dal titolo “If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)”, cover di un classico folk scritto da Pete Seeger e Lee Hays nel 1949.

Interessante da segnalare una nuova versione di “Across the Border” registrata da Tom Russell sul confine tra Messico e New Mexico e una cover degli AC/DC “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”  con voce e chitarra di Tom Morello.

Jim Musselman, fondatore dell’etichetta, ha dichiarato che i tre CD “sono stati volutamente proposti come temi separati, ma spesso sovrapposti, in modo da rispondere agli obiettivi della Appleseed Recordings: dare visibilità alle canzoni di giustizia sociale, sia quelle attuali che quelle del passato; pubblicare nuove canzoni basate su esperienze personali e più legate ai tempi moderni; mantenere vive le canzoni tradizionali della storia del nostro paese e del nostro mondo ancora vitali. Per imparare come andare avanti, non possiamo mai dimenticare le lezioni o le canzoni del passato”.
